CREANDO MI FUTURO - HELP US FLY! Real success for Mayan Families
Food justice is an important part of community justice. Because our families are of scant resources (literacy and education limitations, few job skills, no land for cultivating, no inheritance potential) they lack the opportunities that others in the community have. To "level the playing field" for their children, we offer monthly food baskets of corn, rice, beans, oil, eggs and soap.
The Food distribution is managed by the Parent Board (photo above)
GOOD NUTRITION MEANS IMPROVED LEARNING CAPACITY.
Every Saturday the children have the opportunity to learn various art and craft skills to implement right-brained learning for cerebral balance, learn skills they can actually use at home, in school and in life. The oldest group has the opportunity to sell their paintings in our small store and at exhibitions. They may visit community sites or the lakeshore to paint. Each group, with their teacher, decide what their goals and agenda are, and what they need to accomplish them. A small meal is served during class.
ART OPENS MINDS,
With the goal of seeing every child through to high school graduation, we pay for school supplies for every child, and inscription and monthly fees for children in Primero Basico (7th thru 9th) and Diversificado (10-12th grades.)
Most of their parents did not complete high school; many have no schooling at all and thus can't help with their children's homework. The students are welcome in our HomeWork Lab during the week, to use our computers, internet and printer.
AN EDUCATION MEANS MORE LIFE OPPORTUNITY.
1/3 of our mothers didn't even know how to sign their names. Now they're excited to be learning. They will progress to improving their Spanish too, to be able to work in the tourism "industry" here in San Pedro. Help us continue this class. Help them help themselves. A gift of $10 will pay the teacher and materials for 1 session/6 students. (All donations tax deductible - leave your name and address for a tax exemption letter, and please indicate which of our services you are donating to.) THANK YOU! GRACIAS!

Primary school is free, although parents have to pay for school supplies. From 7th grade on, school costs - for school supplies, texts, tuition and monthly fees. For this reason a majority of San Pedro residents have only a sixth grade education. From donations to this effort, CMF pays 80-90% of these costs, for the family, enabling the child to move beyond the menial labor of his/her family's tradition. $20 pays for inscription for one youth; another $20 pays for the year's classes. Many of our children feel the pressure to quit school at 16 to be able to help their mothers, economically. We can offer them technical training if we have the fees (usually $20 per year for inscription and $15 per month, plus materials). This will enable them to get training as chefs, seamstresses, electricians, computer repair, mechanics, etc., in just a year, so they can get a better-paying job instead of breaking rocks, carrying concrete, or working in the fields as their parents and grandparents did. Our training technician can suggest a good match with the youth's skills, and follow the youth thru the training to their first job. $125 will pay a month of this trainer's salary. (All donations tax-deductible; leave your name and address for a January tax exemption letter and please indicate which of our services you are donating to.) THANK YOU! GRACIAS!
